The Letter A Activities for Preschool

When introducing the letter A, we point out all students whose name starts with the letter. Recognizing those with the letter in their name makes it relevant and meaningful to the them and their peers; and we know preschoolers LOVE recognition.

Next, I use a alphabet poster to show them what the letter A and the sound it makes. We hang the poster on the wall where students can see and reference.

In addition, I let them know I put letter A coloring pages in the writing center where they can color during free choice time.

Letter A Printables

After that, I introduce printables. Printables are a way students can learn letter recognition, and the sound letters make before they begin learning how to write the letters with worksheets. One printable we like to use is dot marker printables, but we don’t always use dot markers to color them in. I like to collect counters (or manipulatives) the students can use to cover the letter A’s.  I encourage them to say the letter a sound when they cover each circle.

Tracing Letter A Printables

Once our students recognize and know the sounds letter A makes, we show our students how to write the letters. During large group time I hold up a poster with directional lines and begin tracing the letter with my pointer finger.  Before transitioning to small group I ask each student to come up and trace the letter with their pointer finger and then they go to their table.

Letter A Worksheets for Preschool or Kindergarten

Once my students have a handle on recognizing the letter, knowing the sound it makes and how to write it we introduce worksheets. I use different levels depending where each student is at.
